Debre Damo Monastry
It is founded by Abun Haregawi one of the 9 saints who came to Ethiopia in 6th century A.D. from Middle East. This Monastic-Church, Debre damo standing since then is set perched on the top of sheer-sided plateau, Ascent to this plateau for faithfuls and tourists is with the aid of a long rope of leather hanging down from the summit by the monks residing in the area. According to legend saint Aregawi has been taken to the top of the final stretch of the cliff face with the help of a serpent. This plaited leather rope today represents that miraculous serpent.
