The Nech Sar National Park

The Nech Sar National Park, covering 515 Sq.kms. of area, is the only National park in the world where the critically endangered Swayne’s hartebeest still survives. The terrestrial part of the park is generally a savannah land. However; Nech Sar National Park has more varied vegetation than the usual savannah. The vegetation varies from grass and acacia bush land to a canopy of dense forests.

The park is the best place in Ethiopia to see the Burchel’s Zebra. Some of the other mammal species that can be spotted in this park are grant’s gazelle, Swayne’s hart beet, Colobus monkey, Lion, leopard, serval cat, warthog, reedbuck, bushbuck, dik-dik,waterbuck, cheetah, baboons, klipspringer.  Besides over 340 bird species have been recorded in the park.

Lake Abaya and Chamo are the best features of the park. The most spectacular concentration of Giant crocodiles are found in these Lakes and their shorelines. One of Africa’s impressive displays of big cords can be watched from the place called ‘Azo Gebeya’, meaning crocodile market. These two Rift Valley Lakes separated by a narrow land, locally known as ‘God Bridge’ are also homes for large number of hippos and bird species.
